The Mile High City will soon be able to etch another mud obstacle run into the books. The Merrell Down and Dirty National Mud and Obstacle Series presented by Subaru is making a stop at the Aurora Sports Park this coming Sunday. Event organizers expect a turnout of about 1,500 people ready to brave the elements. Those throwing on racing jerseys can expect to run, crawl and climb through military style obstacles. “Adventure style races have become a fitness revolution. People constantly want to change up their workouts and use different muscles,” says Marketing Coordinator, Suzie Davis.

It’s your choice to sign up for either the 5k or 10k.  If you are looking for more obstacles the 10k is your style. Make like an inchworm through the low crawl and tunnels. Hold on tight as you cargo climb to the top of an inflatable slide. Navigate through obstacles after throwing a weighted sandbag over your shoulder.

No matter how challenging the obstacles sound they are meant to be fun over intimidating. “It’s great especially if you are trying to break into adventure racing. We aren’t trying to scare anyone away. We are an event that anyone can do.” says Administrator of Athlete Services, Erica Taylor.

It’s also a family friendly event! Kiddo’s ages 4-6 can race in a 100 yard dash and soak through a murky put after.  Kids ages 7-13 can come out for the 1 mile race filled with mini obstacles.

Tips

*Also come prepared for the pre race pulled up contest! The winner receives $110 dollars to merrell.com

*Don’t leave in a rush! After the race is a post race celebration filled with BBQ and music. (Included in registration)

*Bring a change of clothes and shoes for after the race

Colorado’s Rugged Maniac Breaks Record

With creator of Rugged Maniac, Rob Dickens

With creator of Rugged Maniac, Rob Dickens

The Rugged Maniac in Lakewood, CO reached new heights and shattered a record in the process. Temperatures fell below 50 degrees F. making this race the coldest Rugged Maniac penciled into the books. The rain fell fast and steady, matching the heart beats of thousands of racers anxiously awaiting the start. BANG! And we were off, slipping, sliding, grinding with every bit of grit and determination we could muster to attack this Rugged Maniac!

Rolling dirt hills became muddy terrain providing no traction for racers. Rain soaked ropes meant to help racers summit steep hills became so slick they were tough to grip.  Splashing into pools to maneuver over lap lanes sent chills down participant’s mud covered bodies.

The Rugged Maniac is in the running for the toughest obstacle Run, With a course jam packed with obstacles racers have no time to catch their breath before it’s time to face a new fear. One of the most unique obstacles is the Normandy climb. Dive into underground tunnels with no lights or sound seeping through. After you make your way back onto ground, get ready for more.

Warrior Dash- New England

Warriors attack New England! This was the first annual Warrior Dash here and it didn’t go smoothly. But that’s a good thing! Warrior Dash Races are quickly making a name for themselves as some of the best adventure races out there. It’s the mud, obstacles and adrenaline that bring out thousands of participants.  And of course the warrior hat.
This course in Amesbury, MA seemed straightforward. You are told it is 3.02 miles and you will come across 12 obstacles. Everything from pulling yourself up and over warrior walls, taking turns in tunnels and even launching yourself over a warrior fire—hot dog! But there was a twist to this race that even race directors could not control. Rain, Rain, Rain on dirt trails made the ENTIRE run one big muddy mess. This is a  challenge you will find no where else and have the camaraderie of fellow warriors.
From the start at Hell’s hill it was muddy going up, even muddier going down and I may have even got mud in my nose! The mud thickens more when the  ground flattens and it feels like quick sand taking you down. But no warriors out there let that happen!  I pawed myself out of the jungle to see a row of obstacles!
One of the most thrilling was the muddy slide at the end—unplanned but good thing the race directors did not limit the fun and decided to roll us on down. Hoses shot water full blast making this one slick slope. I plopped down and decided to take the ride. There was turning back though in the case- you will spin out of control! But you will be declared a WARRIOR! OOHHRAAA!
